The Association for Friends of the Swedish Rome Institute - The Friends of Rome travel scholarship for young people

Friends of Rome travel scholarship for young people

You will receive a one-off travel grant of 10,000 SEK (about 900 EUR) to fund a trip to Italy, primarily to Rome. You must use the grant within one year of it being awarded. It is paid by ‘Svenska Rominstitutets Vänner’ (the Friends of the Swedish Institute in Rome), an association that promotes the study of classical culture and the humanities with a focus on Rome and Italy.

Who can apply

• Level: You are a sixth-form student (at a Gymnasium). Students from related disciplines may also apply, but priority is given to sixth-form students.
• Field of study: Your topic links to Rome and Italy, for example Italian culture, humanities or classical studies.
• What the trip is for: You can explain the purpose of the trip and give a rough estimate of how much it will cost.
• Nationality: Anyone can apply, regardless of their nationality.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted by email to the association. Please state the purpose of your trip and the estimated costs. The application deadline is the last day of February (29 February 2026). The winners will be announced at the association’s Annual General Meeting, which is scheduled for 19 May 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is primarily aimed at Swedish sixth-form pupils who have a particular interest in Rome and Italian culture, which is why the pool of suitable applicants is small. If you fit this profile and can outline a specific trip with a realistic budget, your chances are good. A well-reasoned motivation is more important here than excellent grades.
