About this scholarship

What you get

You will receive a travel grant and scholarship to gain practical skills in iron and steel processing whilst abroad. It covers study trips and travel expenses. The sources do not specify either a fixed amount or a particular duration. The funding comes from a foundation established in 1954 and administered by Jernkontoret, the Swedish Steel Manufacturers’ Association. Its aim is to help young engineers acquire practical knowledge that will benefit the Swedish iron and steel industry.

Who can apply

  • Who you are: You are a young engineer in metallurgy and iron or steel processing, for example a master's student in metallurgical engineering.
  • Your goal: You would like to travel abroad to further your practical knowledge of iron and steel processing in a way that will benefit the Swedish steel industry.
  • Grades: You must have an excellent academic record, as selection is based on academic performance.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via Jernkontoret’s online form. Applications are reviewed four times a year, so your application must be received by one of the following deadlines: 20 February, 20 April, 20 August or 20 October. The Jernkontoret Board makes its decision at its regular meetings. There is no interview.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined. It is aimed at young engineers specialising in metallurgy and steel processing who wish to travel abroad to further develop their practical skills; consequently, the pool of eligible candidates is small. If you clearly specialise in this field and have a good academic record, your chances are good. As there are four application rounds per year, you also have several opportunities to apply.
