Riding Grant at Uppsala University

You get 32 free riding lessons at the Academic Stables in Kvarnbo, Uppsala: two lessons a week over 16 weeks, which covers one semester. This is not cash but a place on a riding course at no cost to you. Uppsala University awards 10 grants each semester: 2 places for beginners and 8 for experienced riders. The Academic Stables have run since 1663 and are the second oldest riding institution in the world after the Spanish Riding School in Vienna.

Who can apply

• University: You are an active student at Uppsala University.
• Full-time study: You take at least 30 credits in the semester you apply for.
• Income: Your income is under SEK 237,000 per year (about EUR 21,000), not counting government study loans.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects and faculties.
• Nationality: All nationalities welcome, including international students.
• Riding level: You can apply as a beginner or an experienced rider. Selection weighs both your study record and your riding skills.

How to apply

You apply through Uppsala University's online scholarship system, logging in with your student account. Applications open at the start of each semester. For the autumn round the window runs from 12 August to 2 September at 17:00. You hear the outcome in the second half of September.

How realistic are your chances?

Only 10 places are offered each semester, so this is competitive. But the target group is narrow: you must be an Uppsala student, and selection weighs riding experience alongside your studies. If you already ride well and study full time, you fit the small pool and have a fair shot, especially for one of the 8 experienced-rider places. Apply within the short late-August window, as the deadline is firm.
