About this scholarship

Laidlaw Leadership and Research Programme

You will receive a scholarship (a fixed sum of money) of about 7,000 EUR (approximately 6,000 GBP), which covers a programme lasting approximately 20 months starting on University of Leeds. In addition to this funding, you will undertake two six-week summer projects. One is your own research project under the supervision of an academic tutor. The other is a practical leadership placement, during which you might, for example, apply your research findings or take part in an expedition abroad alongside other fellows. You will also receive leadership training, coaching, a certificate in ethical leadership awarded as part of the Oxford Character Project, as well as access to a global network of Laidlaw scholars and the opportunity to attend an annual conference. Travel and research grants may also be available. The programme is run by the Laidlaw Foundation, which was founded by the entrepreneur Lord Irvine Laidlaw. Each year, around 25 scholarships are awarded in Leeds.

Who can apply

  • Where you study: You are studying at the University of Leeds.

  • Field of study: Open to all disciplines.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
  • Commitment: You are prepared to complete all parts of the programme, including the two six-week summer projects, one of which takes place abroad.
  • What they look for: Strong research skills and a genuine interest in ethical leadership.

How to apply

You should apply directly to the University of Leeds, submitting a personal statement and a proposed research project. The application deadline is 14 February. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview with the university’s selection panel. Results are usually announced by April.

How realistic are your chances?

Only Leeds students in their first few years of study are eligible to apply, and as only around 25 places are offered each year, competition is fierce within this limited group. Grades alone do not determine admission. A compelling research proposal and a clear demonstration of leadership qualities are the decisive factors. If you meet the requirements regarding your year of study and field of study, can provide evidence of both, and apply early with a compelling personal statement, your chances are good.
