Maplethorpe Fellowships in Pharmacy

A research fellowship is a paid research post. You will receive a fellowship of around 46,000 EUR per year (a salary starting at approximately 39,906 GBP plus a London allowance, a company pension scheme and social security contributions) for up to two years. In addition to your salary, you will receive up to 10,000 GBP per year (approximately 11,500 EUR) for research materials and equipment, as well as up to 2,000 GBP per year (approximately 2,300 EUR) for research travel. Any unspent funds allocated for equipment in the first year will be carried over to the second year. In exceptional circumstances, the post may be extended for a third year. You will lead your own pharmaceutical research project and undertake teaching duties, including at least one lecture module. Funding is provided by the Maplethorpe Trust, and you will work at one of two London-based pharmaceutical faculties: the Institute of Pharmaceutical Science at King’s College London or the UCL School of Pharmacy.

Who can apply

• Career stage: You are at the start of your academic career and generally have no more than two years’ professional experience as a postdoctoral researcher.
• Degree: You hold a PhD in a relevant subject area. If you have not yet obtained this, you will start on a lower pay scale and be promoted once you have submitted your thesis.
• Field: You have a background in pharmacy or healthcare. Pharmacists will be given preference, but other suitable candidates will also be considered.
• Sponsor: A member of staff from the Department of Pharmacy at King’s College London or UCL will assist you with your application.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Working pattern: You can work full-time or part-time. Flexible working arrangements and job-sharing will be considered where possible.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview in July 2026; the post is usually taken up in October of the same year.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a single, highly specialised job vacancy. You will need a background in pharmacy or health research, a confirmed sponsor at one of two specific London universities, and a compelling project proposal. This narrows the field to well-suited early-career researchers, but as a named, well-funded post, it attracts serious applicants. If you fit the profile and secure a supportive sponsor at an early stage, your prospects are good.
