About this scholarship

What you get

Whilst studying engineering at the University of Edinburgh, you will receive about 1,150 EUR (1,000 GBP) per year. Over the entire duration of the Bachelor’s degree (BEng), this amount totals approximately 3,450 EUR (3,000 GBP). During the longer Master’s programme in Engineering (MEng), this may amount to up to approximately 4,600 EUR (4,000 GBP). The scholarship is funded jointly by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), a professional body for engineers, and the university. The most outstanding applicants may be invited to an interview and will then be awarded a higher scholarship: the Belling Scholarship or the BP/Faraday Scholarship. Each of these scholarships is worth approximately 3,450 EUR (3,000 GBP) per year for the duration of your studies, provided that your supervisor’s annual report is satisfactory.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You are starting the first year of an IET-accredited BEng or MEng degree programme in engineering or technology. IET accreditation means that the qualification is officially recognised by the IET.
  • Grades: You have an outstanding academic record, for example three A grades at A-level, three A grades at Advanced Higher, five A grades at Higher, an International Baccalaureate with at least 36 points, or an HND with a ‘Distinction’.
  • Residence: You live in the UK.
  • No double funding: You are not currently receiving any other IET scholarship or grant.

How to apply

Applications are submitted directly via the IET. For the most generously funded scholarships, the Scholarship Committee invites the best applicants to an interview and decides who will receive them.

How realistic are your chances?

The standard scholarship is subject to strict conditions: you must have excellent exam results, be resident in the United Kingdom and have a place on a specific engineering degree programme accredited by the IET. Consequently, the pool of eligible applicants is small. If you clearly meet these criteria, your chances of securing the standard scholarship are quite good. The additional scholarships mentioned by name are far more difficult to obtain, as only a select few of the best applicants are invited for an interview.
