Geography and the Environment Gibbs Prize

For outstanding achievement on the ‘Geography and Environment’ degree programme at the University of Oxford, you will receive a one-off cash award of up to about 865 EUR (750 GBP). This is an achievement award for excellence in your coursework and written final examinations, not a continuing scholarship. The University of Oxford awards this prize as part of the series of prizes endowed by Charles D. D. Gibbs. Each year, several prize tiers are awarded: a first prize of approximately 865 EUR (750 GBP), a prize for the runner-up (Proxime Accessit) of approximately 495 EUR (430 GBP) and three book prizes, each worth approximately 220 EUR (190 GBP).

Who can apply

• University: You’re studying at the University of Oxford.
• Subject: You are studying on the ‘Geography and Environment’ degree programme.
• Study phase: You are in the final year of your Bachelor’s degree and are currently sitting your ‘Final Honour School’ examinations (the final written examinations that determine your final degree mark at Oxford).
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

You do not need to apply. The prize is awarded automatically to the best students, based on your performance in your modules and the results of your final examination. In rare cases, an application is required; this would then be specified in the announcement issued by your department.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a top-tier award for the highest-achieving geography students in their final year at university, and is therefore awarded to only a handful of people each year. It is not possible to apply for it. The decisive factors are exam marks and academic performance. The examiners may also decide not to award the prize in a given year if no candidate is of a high enough standard.
