The 3 Verulam Buildings Scholarship

You will receive about 17,250 EUR (£15,000) for one year to study for a Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) at the University of Oxford. The BCL is a one-year postgraduate law programme, so the scholarship covers the entire duration of your studies. The funding is provided by 3 Verulam Buildings, a commercial law firm in London. The Faculty of Law at the University of Oxford has been awarding the scholarship once a year since 2010.

Who can apply

• Course: You are applying for the BCL programme at the Faculty of Law, University of Oxford.
• Your degree: You hold, or are about to obtain, a law degree recognised for admission to the bar in England and Wales.
• Field interest: An interest in private law (law governing relations between private individuals, e.g. contract law, property law and the law of obligations) is an advantage, but not a prerequisite.
• College: You could be at any college in Oxford.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, including students from the UK and abroad.
• Finances: You submit a means-test form so that your financial circumstances can be taken into account.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. Every BCL applicant is automatically considered on the basis of their BCL application. Once you have received an offer, please complete the means-test form linked in your offer letter. The funding has already been awarded for 2025/26 and will next be available for 2026/27.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a single award linked to a specific degree programme at Oxford; therefore, only admitted BCL candidates apply for it. They already constitute a rigorously selected group. Admission to the BCL programme is the real hurdle. If you secure a place on the course, hold the relevant law degree and demonstrate an interest in private law, your prospects are good. However, as only one scholarship is awarded each year, there are no guarantees.
