What a Chevening Scholarship gives you

You will receive a scholarship of full scholarship for a one-year Master’s degree programme at a UK university, funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). It covers your full tuition fees as well as a monthly living allowance for accommodation and living costs. The amount is higher if you are studying in London and is reviewed annually. You will also receive return economy-class air tickets from your home country, an arrival allowance, a departure allowance, a travel allowance, the fees for your UK visa, and up to approximately 90 euros (75 GBP) for a TB test, should this be required. In addition to the financial support, you will take part in a networking programme with other scholarship holders and an alumni network with more than 60,000 members, as well as events organised by the FCDO and its partners.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You are a national of one of the 140+ countries whose citizens are eligible for a Chevening Scholarship. You must not hold British nationality or dual British nationality. Limited exceptions apply to British Overseas Territories and holders of a BN(O) passport from Hong Kong.
• Where you study: You are undertaking a one-year Master’s degree at a British university. You are applying for three different eligible degree programmes in the UK and must be able to provide evidence of an unconditional offer from at least one of these programmes by the application deadline.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Degree: You must hold a bachelor’s degree that qualifies you for a master’s programme in the United Kingdom and which was completed at least two years before the application deadline. Even if you already hold a master’s degree, you may still apply.
• Work experience: You must have at least two years’ professional experience (approximately 2,800 hours) gained since completing your bachelor’s degree. Full-time and part-time employment, voluntary work and work placements are all taken into account.
• Return commitment: You undertake to return to your home country for at least two years once the scholarship has ended.
• Age: No age limit.
• Who cannot apply: You are living in the UK at the time of application, have previously studied in the UK on a UK government scholarship, or work for a government organisation, the British Council or a partner university in the UK.

How to apply

You can apply free of charge via the online system on the Chevening country page for your country of residence. The application deadline is 6 October. Independent panels review and assess each application. If you are shortlisted, you will attend an interview at the British Embassy or High Commission in your country. The use of AI to draft your application answers is prohibited.

How realistic are your chances?

Chevening is a world-renowned, fully-funded scholarship, which is why it attracts a very large and competitive pool of applicants. Only a small proportion of applicants are offered a place. Good grades alone are not enough. The selection process focuses on genuine, demonstrable leadership qualities, networking skills and a clear career plan linked to the UK’s priorities. If you can demonstrate concrete achievements in these areas and meet all the specified criteria, you have a real chance. Treat the application as a challenging task rather than a mere formality.
