Swedish General Foreign Trade Association - Scholarship Fund

Benefit

You can receive financial support for attending school in Sweden, language courses or a work placement whilst you or your family are living abroad. This support is available in various forms:

• A scholarship to cover part of the school fees at a Swedish boarding school in Sweden (Sigtuna Humanistiska Läroverket or Lundsbergs skola) or at a recognised Swedish school abroad.
• A scholarship for a two-week or longer summer course in Swedish language and culture.
• A grant to cover the costs of the TISUS language test, the entrance test for Swedish higher education institutions, of up to approximately 230 EUR (2,500 SEK).
• An internship grant for university graduates undertaking an internship at a Swedish Chamber of Commerce abroad.

The Swedish Foreign Trade Association has set up the fund to enable Swedish children living abroad to access the Swedish education system.

Eligibility

• Citizenship: You and at least one of your parents hold Swedish nationality.
• Where you live: Your family lives, or will be living, abroad, so please provide a foreign address. To be eligible for the TISUS scholarship, you may also be resident in Sweden if you hold a comparable school-leaving qualification from abroad.
• School level: The school scholarships are available for Years 7 to 9 and for the upper school (Gymnasium, Years 1 to 3). The work placement scholarship is aimed at individuals who have already completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.
• Age: The summer course and the TISUS scholarships are aimed at participants up to the age of 23. The internship scholarship is aimed at graduates up to the age of 30 who have so far gained little work experience abroad.
• Subject: Open to all subjects.
• Grades: These scholarships are not awarded on the basis of academic results.
• Parents' work (bonus, not required): Preference is given to families whose work is related to Swedish foreign trade and international business.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the Fund’s application portal. For school, summer course and TISUS grants, the main application window runs each year from 1 February to 30 April for the coming school year. A second application window, from 3 August to 11 September, applies exclusively to the TISUS test in October. For school grants, a parent or guardian submits the application, not the pupil. Applicants will be notified by email at the end of June. A new application is required for each school year or course.

How realistic are your chances?

The eligibility criteria for this fund are narrowly defined: you and one of your parents must be Swedish citizens living abroad, and each grant is earmarked for a specific school, a specific course or a specific work placement. This keeps the pool of eligible applicants small. As awards are not based on grades, it is more important to meet the specific requirements and apply within the application period than to have an outstanding academic record. An applicant who meets the requirements well stands a good chance of success.
