Mälardalen University Scholarship Programme

You get a full tuition waiver that covers 100% of the cost of your Master's programme at Mälardalen University (MDU) in Sweden. The waiver runs for the whole length of your programme, as long as you keep up the normal study pace: at least 22.5 credits per semester and at least 45 credits per academic year. It covers tuition only, not your living costs. Budget roughly SEK 10,000-12,000 per month (about 900-1,050 EUR) for rent, food and daily expenses. MDU awards a limited number of these waivers each year to its strongest international applicants.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You are applying for a Master's programme at MDU.
• Field of study: Any subject offered as a Master's programme to international students.
• Nationality: You are from a country outside the EU, the EEA and Switzerland, so you have to pay tuition fees in Sweden.
• First choice: You list MDU as your first-choice university in your admissions application.
• Grades: You have strong academic results.
• Application fee: You have paid the admissions application fee on time.
• Excluded countries: You are not from one of the 12 countries in Sweden's long-term development cooperation (Bangladesh, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia). Applicants from those countries apply for the Swedish Institute Study Scholarship instead.

How to apply

First apply for your MDU Master's programme through the national portal universityadmissions.se, with MDU as your first choice, by 15 January. Then submit the separate scholarship form with your other documents to University Admissions Sweden by 2 February. Decisions arrive by email between 27 and 31 March. If you are not selected, you receive an invoice for the tuition fee instead. The next application window opens in mid-October 2026 for programmes starting in autumn 2027.

How realistic are your chances?

MDU awards only a limited number of these waivers each year and selects on academic strength, so competition among fee-paying international applicants is real. Because it is tied to one university and a first-choice application, the pool is narrower than for national Swedish scholarships. If your grades are strong, you meet the country conditions and you submit both forms on time, your prospects are reasonable.
