University of Brighton Sports Scholarships

What you get

You get a yearly sports bursary plus a package of performance support at the University of Brighton. UK/Home students get up to £2,500 for the academic year (about 2,900 EUR). International students get a fee-waiver bursary of up to £5,000 (about 5,800 EUR), which goes to the top five undergraduate and postgraduate athletes. On top of the money you get free gym membership, strength and conditioning sessions in individuals and small groups, professional coaching, physiotherapy and sports massage, recovery services including hydrotherapy, and lifestyle mentoring (one-to-one guidance on balancing sport and study). You also get an athlete workshop programme covering nutrition, sports psychology and injury prevention, official Sport Brighton kit and better access to training facilities. The award covers one academic year, and you must re-apply each year. The exact amount depends on your competition level and how strong the other applications are that year.

Who can apply

• University: You are a current University of Brighton student, or you hold a conditional or unconditional offer to study there.
• Level of study: Undergraduate and postgraduate students in any year can apply.
• Sport level: You compete at regional level or above in your sport.
• Sport: A wide range of recognised sports counts, including disability sport.
• Commitment: You will take part in the Sport Brighton scholarship programme and, where possible, represent the university in BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) competitions.
• Nationality: Both UK/Home and international students can apply. There is a separate form for each.

How to apply

You apply online through the Sport Brighton website, using either the UK/Home form or the International form. Applications usually close at the end of July, after which provisional offers go out. Final offers, including late applications, are decided after A-level results day, and any remaining places are filled then.

How realistic are your chances?

Places are limited and change each year, and awards are decided competitively. So meeting the regional-level minimum alone does not guarantee one. The pool is narrowed to Brighton students and offer-holders who genuinely compete at a high level, so a well-matched athlete with a clear competition record has solid prospects. For international students the fee-waiver bursary is tighter, as it goes only to the top five. A strong sporting record matters most, and applying before the July deadline helps.
