University of Nottingham - Deng Yaping Sports Scholarship

What the Deng Yaping Sports Scholarship gives you

You will receive a grant of approximately 998 EUR towards your tuition fees at the University of Nottingham in the UK. You will also receive comprehensive sports support for up to 12 months during your studies. This includes access to the university’s sports facilities (including the David Ross Sports Village), coaching, up to 15 hours of playing time per week, individual and group training, video analysis, multi-ball training, a strength and conditioning programme, access to physiotherapy, training camps and mentoring (regular support from an experienced coach). The scholarship was established in 2013 with the support of Dr Deng Yaping, a Chinese table tennis champion who herself obtained her Master’s degree at Nottingham.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You are a Chinese national.
• Sport: You take part in table tennis or badminton competitions at national or international level.
• Where you study: You’re studying at the University of Nottingham in the UK.
• Level of study: You are a Bachelor’s or Master’s student, or an exchange student.
• Field of study: Any topic is fine.
• English: Depending on your language skills and the requirements of your degree programme, you may need to complete a pre-sessional English course before starting your studies.

How to apply

Please complete the official application form and email it to the university’s international recruitment team. There are two application deadlines, depending on which English course you require. Apply by 20 October if you require the longer course, which starts in January. Apply by 27 January if you require the shorter course, which starts in April. The Sports Department will shortlist applicants who meet the entry requirements, and you will be notified of the result by email.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined. You must be a Chinese national, play table tennis or badminton at a high level, and be studying at a specific university – so the pool of eligible applicants is small. If you can demonstrate recent, impressive competition results in either of these two sports, your chances are good. Places are limited and the application period closes as soon as all places have been filled. You should therefore apply as early as possible.
