About this scholarship

What you get

The FPU programme is a four-year employment contract – not a scholarship – awarded by a Spanish university where you will be writing your doctoral thesis. It includes a stipend of at least EUR 24,360 gross per year (1,173 EUR per month in 12 instalments, plus two annual bonus payments). The programme is administered by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Higher Education and funds 900 places per round. The contract also includes teaching duties at the university: a minimum of 90 and a maximum of 180 hours over the four years. If you complete your PhD before the start of the final year of the contract, you may add up to one year as a postdoctoral phase. Funding for research stays abroad can be applied for as part of a separate annual application. If you have a disability of 33% or more, the contract may be extended to six years.

Who can apply

  • Degree level: You must hold at least a bachelor’s degree (Grado, Licenciatura, Ingeniería or Arquitectura).
  • Doctoral status: You are enrolled on a PhD programme at a Spanish university this academic year, or you hold a Master’s degree (or are currently enrolled on a Master’s programme) which will enable you to gain entry to a PhD programme the following year.
  • Not yet a doctor: You have not yet completed your PhD and are therefore not yet eligible to be awarded a doctoral degree.
  • No prior long funding: You have not received a similar PhD scholarship in the last 24 months and do not have an active FPU contract from a previous funding round.
  • Field: All academic disciplines are eligible for funding.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome, provided they meet the academic entry requirements.

How to apply
