About this scholarship

Latvian state scholarship for summer schools

You will receive 1,000 EUR for taking part in a summer school at a Latvian university; this is a one-off payment covering the entire programme. The summer schools usually take place in July or August 2026 and last one to two weeks. Topics range from the Latvian language and culture to drone technology, integrated photonics, temporary architecture and contemporary jewellery. The State Agency for Educational Development (VIAA) pays the money directly to the summer school organiser, so that it is used to secure your place and does not end up in your bank account. You are responsible for your own travel costs to Latvia.

Who can apply

  • Who you are: You are a student, lecturer or research assistant at a university outside Latvia.
  • Nationality: You are a national of one of the eligible countries, such as Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Poland, Austria, Switzerland, Ukraine, Japan, South Korea, China or the USA. You can find the full list in the information box.
  • Field of study: Any topic. Every summer school has its own theme – so choose one that suits you.

How to apply

You apply directly to the organiser of your chosen summer school via the website of the relevant Latvian university. You must submit the summer school application form, your CV and a personal statement. The application window for 2026 runs from 1 February to 1 April 2026. A VIAA committee decides who will receive funding.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is restricted to nationals of certain partner countries and to a handful of specifically named summer schools, meaning that the pool of eligible applicants is smaller than for open scholarships. If you come from an eligible country, meet the thematic requirements of a summer school and submit a compelling personal statement before the deadline in April, your chances are good. Apply early, as places on the individual programmes are limited.
