What the Propontis Foundation scholarship gives you

You will receive a monthly grant of up to 24 months for a Master’s degree programme abroad. The foundation does not publish the exact amount; please therefore enquire directly with them. The Propontis Foundation (also spelled Propondis) is a Greek charitable foundation established in 1999 to support young academics. It awards 20 study places abroad each year. It also runs a programme for studying within Greece and a postdoctoral research programme; however, this entry deals exclusively with the scholarship for studying abroad.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You are currently studying for a Master’s degree abroad or are about to start such a programme. You can apply whilst you are still studying for your Bachelor’s degree, provided you complete your Bachelor’s degree on time.
• Field of study: Your degree subject is shipbuilding and marine engineering, maritime studies, maritime law, company law or economics.
• Where you study: Any university abroad. If you choose a university outside Europe, you must explain why the standard of teaching in your subject area is higher there than in Europe.
• Nationality: You are Greek. The application and all correspondence must be in Greek. Male applicants must provide proof of military service.
• Grades: You must hold at least a 7.0/10 from a Greek university or an equivalent qualification from another country (for example, a British 2:2, a US/Canadian 2.5/4.0, a German 2.3 or a French ‘Assez Bien’ 13/20).
• Age: You fall under 26 until 31 December of the application year, or under 28 if you are male and have completed your military service.
• Language: You hold an official foreign language certificate.

How to apply

Please request the application, interview and data protection forms from the Foundation by email. Please return your complete application documents by 12 February. You may list up to four universities in order of preference. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very narrowly defined: you must be a Greek national, not exceed the age limit, be studying specific subjects in the fields of maritime studies, law or economics, and be going abroad to undertake a Master’s degree. The pool of eligible applicants is therefore small. With 20 places available each year, someone who clearly meets these criteria and has very good grades stands a good chance. Make sure you arrange your letters of recommendation and admission documents well in advance, as the application process is very detailed.
