About this scholarship
Latvian state scholarship for summer schools (VIAA)
You will receive a 1,000 EUR grant grant to attend a summer school at a Latvian university, which covers the full course fees (usually one to two weeks). The money will not be paid directly to you. The State Agency for Educational Development (VIAA), which administers these grants on behalf of the Ministry of Education, will transfer the amount for your participation directly to the summer school organiser. You will still be responsible for the costs of travelling to and from Latvia. The summer schools for 2026 cover topics such as the Latvian language and culture, drone technology in smart cities, integrated photonics, temporary architecture and contemporary jewellery.
Who can apply
- Status: You are a student, a research assistant or a research fellow at a university outside Latvia.
- Nationality: You are a national of one of the approximately 39 eligible countries. These include many European countries (such as Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Poland and Austria) as well as countries such as China, Japan, South Korea, the United States, Turkey, Ukraine, Mexico and Vietnam.
- Field of study: Any subject. Simply apply to the summer school that suits you best.
- Where you go: The summer school takes place at a university in Latvia.
How to apply
You apply directly to the university organising your chosen summer school, usually by submitting an application form, a CV and a personal statement. Please check the relevant university’s website for details of the exact documents required. The application period for 2026 begins on 1 February and ends on 1 April. The final decision is made by a VIAA committee.
How realistic are your chances?
The eligibility criteria are broad in terms of nationality but narrow in terms of scope: only students and staff from foreign higher education institutions who are applying for a specific short course in Latvia are eligible. The level of competition depends on the specific summer school and the number of places available. If your country is on the list, you write a compelling personal statement relating to your chosen course, and you apply before the deadline in April, your chances are good.
