Thomas B. Thrige's Foundation grant

You will receive a one-off grant of around 2,680 EUR (usually between 10,000 and 30,000 DKK). Use this to attend a conference or for a short stay abroad during which you can present your own research findings. In exceptional cases, the foundation may award a higher grant for longer periods of study or research abroad. The funds are intended for further study at foreign universities in addition to a Master’s degree already held. This Danish foundation was established in 1933 by the manufacturer Thomas Barfoed Thrige and supports technical and business-related disciplines.

Who can apply

• Degree: You already hold a Master’s degree (Danish: ‘kandidatgrad’). Law graduates must also be admitted to the bar (Danish: ‘advokatbestalling’).
• University link: You work at a Danish university or higher education institution.
• Experience: You have several years’ relevant professional experience and would like to pursue further training abroad. The main target group here is doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers.
• Where you go: Your study or research placement will take place abroad, not in Denmark. Partial study placements abroad prior to the completion of your Danish Master’s degree are not eligible for funding.
• Field of study: Technical disciplines such as mechanics, composite materials, low-current and microwave electronics, and electromechanics, as well as other STEM subjects or business-related subjects such as management, economics and IT.
• Not funded: Medicine, biotechnology and related disciplines, LL.M. programmes, PhD students working in industry (whose costs should be covered by their employer), as well as degree programmes that you have already started or completed by the time the committee reviews your application.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the Foundation’s online form. There are three application deadlines each year: 4 May, 10 September and 23 December. The board makes its decision at its meetings. In doing so, it takes into account the amount of other funding you have already received and the proportion you are contributing yourself.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very narrowly defined. You must hold a Danish Master’s degree, have an affiliation with a Danish higher education institution, have professional experience, and have undertaken a research or study placement abroad in specific technical or business administration fields. This keeps the pool of applicants small, meaning that a well-suited candidate has a strong chance of success. Your chances are better if you can demonstrate co-funding from your institution as well as a personal contribution – the committee places particular emphasis on this.
