Nordea travel scholarship (Nordeas resestipendium)

You get a travel grant to study or do research outside Sweden as part of your doctorate. The total pot is 100,000 SEK per year (about 9,000 EUR). It is usually split among several recipients, so a single grant is smaller: recent awards were around 25,000 SEK (about 2,200 EUR) each. There is no fixed length for the trip. You state how long you plan to be away in your application. The money comes from Nordeas Norrlandsstiftelse, a foundation linked to the Nordea bank that supports research in northern Sweden.

Who can apply

• Level: You are a doctoral student (PhD candidate) admitted to and actively working on a research programme.
• University: You study at Mittuniversitetet (for this call), or at Luleå University of Technology or Umeå University.
• Where you go: You use the grant for study or research abroad, outside Sweden, no later than the academic year after you win it.
• Field of study: Your research should relate to banking and benefit northern Sweden (Västernorrland, Västerbotten and Norrbotten). Social sciences, law, data science and life sciences fit especially well.

How to apply

You apply through Mittuniversitetet, not directly to the foundation. Send an application of at most five pages. It must state the purpose of your research, where you plan to go, how long you will stay, your supervisor's name and a cost estimate. The deadline for the 2026 round is 13 April 2026. A university review group prepares the decision, and the foundation's board makes the final award.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is narrow: you must be an active PhD student at one of three northern Swedish universities, with research that ties to banking and benefits the region. That keeps the applicant pool small. If you clearly fit and can show how your trip serves that purpose, your prospects are good. The fixed yearly pot is shared among several people, so individual amounts stay modest.
