Government of Denmark - Scholarships for study abroad

Benefit

You will receive up to approximately 780 EUR for the tuition fees you pay to a foreign higher education institution, for a period of up to 2 years. This grant supplements the standard Danish state study grant (SU), the monthly grant that every eligible Danish student receives. The Danish government pays this grant via the education agency su.dk. The amount of the grant is capped at the sum that a comparable Danish institution would receive for the same degree programme. If your tuition fees abroad are higher, you will have to cover the difference yourself or take out a student loan. The money is tax-free and independent of your income. It is transferred to your Danish NemKonto bank account no earlier than 3 months before the start of your studies and for a maximum of 12 months at a time.

Eligibility

• Where you go: You are going abroad, either for a period of study that counts in full towards your Danish degree, or to undertake a full Master’s programme abroad (60 to 120 ECTS) which is included on the ‘Fast Track’ list recognised by Denmark or the list for artistic and cultural degree programmes.
• SU entitlement: You are eligible for the standard Danish state student grant (SU), have applied for it and meet all the eligibility criteria. This is the key criterion.
• Nationality: As a rule, you must be a Danish citizen. EU/EEA citizens may meet the requirements if they can demonstrate close ties to Denmark; the same applies to certain foreign nationals who, under EU law, have the right to work in Denmark.
• Admission and fees: You applied for the degree programme abroad yourself and are actually paying tuition fees there.
• Grant months left: At the start of your degree, you still have plenty of SU grant months left.
• Field of study: Any subject is permitted, provided that the degree programme is officially recognised in the country where it is studied.

How to apply

You apply online via the minSU/Fast-Track portal. To study abroad whilst on your degree programme, you should apply to your Danish educational institution. To undertake a full Master’s degree programme abroad, you should apply to the Agency for Special Education Grants. You must apply no earlier than 12 months before the start of your studies and no later than the first month for which you wish to apply for funding.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a competitive scholarship with a fixed number of places. Rather, it is an entitlement linked to the Danish SU system. If you are eligible for SU, have been admitted to a recognised degree programme abroad and are paying tuition fees, you meet the criteria. The main hurdles are of a practical nature: the Master’s programme abroad must be on the recognised list, and you must provide proof of admission, payment of fees and academic progress by the relevant deadlines.
