About this scholarship

ASF Fellowships to study in America

You will receive a scholarship worth up to about 11,600 EUR (up to approximately 22,500 USD, with smaller scholarships starting at around 3,300 USD) to study or undertake research at a US university for up to 1 years. A scholarship is a form of financial support that enables you to study or conduct research. The exact amount is determined on a case-by-case basis and depends on your destination and the funds available. The funding comes from the American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF), a charitable organisation that promotes educational exchange between the US and the Nordic countries. Each year, the foundation awards over 500,000 USD to Nordic nationals.

Who can apply

  • Nationality: You are a national of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden.
  • Level: You already hold a first degree and are currently studying or conducting research as part of a Master’s or PhD programme.
  • Where you go: You are studying or conducting research in the USA at a university or institution that has confirmed it will accept you.
  • Field of study: Any subject.

How to apply

If you are Danish, you should apply via the ASF online platform once Fulbright Denmark has recommended you. The application deadline is 22 April. If you are from Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden, do not apply to the ASF yourself. A partner organisation in your country will nominate you and set its own application deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

The funding is awarded exclusively to citizens of the Nordic countries who wish to undertake postgraduate studies in the USA. Consequently, the pool of applicants is smaller than for open international scholarships, and there is a large amount of funding available. The more specific your project is, the better your chances will be, as you will need a US institution to confirm that it will accept you. A clear study plan and this confirmed admission are the characteristics that distinguish compelling applications.
